Feed applicationsTriticale has long been known as a high-quality component of livestock rations. As part of CTBI’s mandate, research is ongoing to determine how triticale’s role in livestock nutrition can be enhanced. One avenue for this research relates to dry distillers’ grain with solubles (DDGS), a co-product of ethanol production. Two current CTBI-funded research projects are determining the value of triticale DDGS for the production of feedlot cattle, lactating dairy cows, hogs and broilers. This value will be compared with that of corn DDGS, canola meal and soybean meal. The more valuable triticale DDGS can be shown to be, the more likely triticale is to achieve success and sustainability as a biorefinery feedstock. A third project is studying the impact of fibre and starch products from triticale on intestinal health and metabolic status of swine. |
